5.11 Tactical Response XR1T Flashlight

AllOutdoor Review: 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T Flashlight

Tactical flashlights are one of those gear categories where you can spend anywhere from twenty bucks to two hundred and still end up with something that works. The question is whether you’re getting actual value or just paying for a name. 5.11 Tactical has been making gear for law enforcement and civilian use for years, and their Response XR1T sits right in that middle ground at $75. I’ve been carrying it daily for about a week, and honestly, my dad won’t give it back after I let him borrow it. Let’s get into the 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T and see if it’s worth the money.

Specifications: 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T

The XR1T is built from aerospace-grade machined aluminum with Type III anodization and carries an IP68 water-resistant rating, meaning it’s submersible to 2 meters for 30 minutes. The light offers two output modes—1200 lumens on high with a 280-meter beam distance, and 30 lumens on low with a 50-meter reach. The tail-mounted push button provides both momentary-on capability and mode switching, with raised sides around the button to prevent accidental activation. What sets this apart from cheaper lights is the battery flexibility: it runs on two CR123A batteries (included) or a single 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery with the included adapter sleeve.

  • Light Output (High Mode): 1200 lumens, 280m beam distance, 1.5 hour runtime
  • Light Output (Low Mode): 30 lumens, 50m beam distance, 20 hour runtime
  • Construction: Aerospace-grade machined aluminum, Type III anodization
  • Water Resistance: IP68 (submersible to 2 meters for 30 minutes)
  • Length: 5.75 inches
  • Body Diameter: 1 inch
  • Head Diameter: 1.4 inches
  • Power Source: 2x CR123A batteries (included) or 18650 rechargeable Li-ion (not included)
  • Features: Tail push button with momentary-on, removable pocket clip, battery adapter sleeve included
  • Weight: (Not specified by manufacturer)

At $75, the Response XR1T sits in the middle of the tactical flashlight market. You can find cheaper lights that claim similar output, but they’re usually missing the build quality or battery options. The IP68 rating and aerospace-grade construction put it above basic hardware store lights, while the price keeps it accessible compared to premium brands that push into the $100-150 range for similar specs. 5.11 isn’t making wild claims about this being the brightest or toughest light on the market—they’re positioning it as a reliable, versatile option that won’t break the bank.

“When the mission demands a portable light solution that’s versatile and reliable, look no further than our Response XR1T Flashlight. Machined from aerospace-grade aluminum, the Response XR1T can take a beating. It’s earned an IP68 water-resistant rating, and is fully submersible at 2 meters for 30 minutes. Your choice of three power outputs—from 1,250 to 40 lumens—is quickly selected on the tailcap, which also allows momentary activation. Powered by a pair of common CR123 batteries, or an optional 18650 rechargeable Li-ion battery, this compact flashlight is always at hand thanks to the removable clip. Light it up fast with the Response XR1T.”

First Impressions: 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T

The packaging is nothing special, standard pegboard retail stuff you’d see hanging in any tactical supply store. Unassuming. Inside, you get the flashlight, two CR123A batteries, a battery adapter sleeve, a removable pocket clip already attached, and a basic user manual. No case, no extras, just what you need to start using it.

When you pull the XR1T out, it’s immediately clear this thing is built right. Solid machined aluminum, good weight to it, none of that hollow feeling you get from cheaper lights. The texture on the body gives you something to grip without being aggressive enough to tear up your pocket. The anodizing feels durable, though I can’t speak to long-term wear after just a week.

What caught my attention right away was the head. It’s wider than the body—1.4 inches versus 1 inch—which isn’t my preference for everyday carry. I like uniform pocket lights. Their XR1C (which appears to be discontinued now) would be more my speed for that reason alone. But that’s aesthetics. Functionally, it’s fine. Doesn’t catch coming out of the pocket, just looks different than what I’m used to. The removable clip works well for edge-of-pocket carry with the light sitting inside your pocket rather than hanging out.

The tail button has raised sides that immediately made sense—pocket protection against accidental activation. I never had an issue with it turning on when I didn’t want it to. The battery adapter sleeve is a nice touch. The batteries sit in there solid with zero rattle, which matters more than you’d think.

In the Field: 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T

I put this light through its paces everywhere I could think of. Gunsmithing work looking inside actions and hunting for those tiny parts that always seem to teleport across the shop floor. Up at the cabin poking around in an old shed. General use at work. Daily pocket carry replacing my regular light. I didn’t set out to torture test it—no drop tests, didn’t dunk it in water, but it lived in my pocket or my hand for about a week straight.

The beam is crisp. No weird artifacts or hotspots, but the edges are soft enough that you’re not giving everything an x-ray. When I lit up the area outside the cabin at night, yeah, 1200 lumens is 1200 lumens. It’s bright. I didn’t do scientific beam distance testing, but it reaches. For close-up work like inspecting the inside of a firearm or finding dropped parts on a dark shop floor, it did exactly what I needed.

Response XR1T Flashlight

My regular EDC light sits at about 1000 lumens, so the XR1T’s output wasn’t a massive jump. What I did miss was the magnet on my usual light. That’s handy when you need hands-free work. The XR1T doesn’t have that, so you’re clipping it somewhere or holding it. Not a dealbreaker, just different.

Here’s where I had to adapt: the interface. The tail button has a momentary-on function if you half-press it, and a full click locks it on. Then you can switch between high and low modes, though I’m not entirely sure of the exact sequence anymore because I’m impatient and heavy-handed. I can do the half-press thing, I just don’t care to. My motor skills are very nutcracker in nature, so intentional light presses aren’t my strong suit. The button itself works fine—I just prefer simpler interfaces that don’t make me think about what I’m doing.

That 30-lumen low mode exists, and I used it, but I’m not sure how often I’d actually choose it. I get why it’s there—close-up work where 1200 lumens drowns out detail—but part of me prefers the simpler approach of just having one setting. If I’m reaching for a light, I want light. The mode switching makes me think more than I want to when I’m just trying to see something.

Response XR1T Flashlight

The batteries held up fine. I ran it on the included CR123A batteries the whole time and never noticed any drop in performance, though I didn’t run them dead. The light claims 1.5 hours on high with those batteries. I believe it. You can run an 18650 rechargeable in this, which I’d probably prefer if I were buying one for myself. I didn’t test that since the battery isn’t included, but having the option is smart.

Final Thoughts: 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T

Seventy-five bucks sits right in that goldilocks zone for price and quality. It’s not cheap enough to feel like you’re compromising, and it’s not expensive enough to make you hesitate about actually using it. The 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T is a solid, well-built light that does exactly what it’s supposed to do. The wider head isn’t my favorite for EDC aesthetics, and I’d rather have a simpler interface, but those are preferences, not problems.

My dad’s never owned a really good flashlight. His work might have given him one at some point, but if they did, it was plain and unimpressive. He needs a light for work, and since I gave him this one, he’s been carrying it. I guarantee if I tried to take it back, I’d get sad puppy eyes. That’s as honest a review as you’re going to get. If I needed a light to leave in the car, keep bedside, or toss in a toolbox, I’d buy one of these from 5.11 without thinking twice. This experience has me looking at other 5.11 lights. That says enough.

Response XR1T Flashlight
