Fall and winter are more than just astronomical and meteorological periods marked by stark changes in weather. They are hunting seasons across the United States for whitetail deer, elk, and other wild game. It is a time on the calendar where we are meeting with friends and family for the holidays – Thanksgiving and Christmas. Also, it is when we celebrate our success in the field and reunion with loved ones over a drink. For myself, my spirit of choice is typically a brown liquor like scotch, bourbon, or whiskey. So, in this AllOutdoor Review, we take a look at Wyoming Whiskey – first legal distillery in the great state of Wyoming – and their National Parks No. 4 edition featuring Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Let’s dive in!

Wyoming Whiskey – Their Story
The story of Wyoming Whiskey is one of difficulty, fortitude, perseverance, and triumph. For anyone who has started a business, you understand the seemingly insurmountable hurdles that must be overcome to be successful. Now, tie in an industry that safeguards legacy, fears outsiders, and is oppressively – at times – overseen by the government, and you have the liquor industry.
As we mentioned, Wyoming Whiskey was, and still is, first legal distillery in the great state of Wyoming, but that alone is not enough. You can never rest on your laurels in an industry as cut-throat as theirs. You need a product that inspires, gives back, and makes people want to come back for more. They understand this and that is why there are 5 prominent traits that continue to ensure their growth in the world of whiskey.
- Locally Sourced Grain – Our commitment to excellence extends to our ingredients. We exclusively source non-GMO grains from local farms in Byron, collaborating closely with farmers to select corn and wheat strains that enhance our bourbon’s unique flavor profile.
- Glacier Pure Water – The foundation of our whiskey lies in the pure waters of the Madison Formation, drawn from a mile underground and untouched since the bronze age. This pristine water serves as the cornerstone of our craft, imparting a clarity and depth to every sip.
- Extreme Temperatures – Our home in Kirby, with its ice-cold winters and scorching summers, embodies the true essence of Wyoming weather, ranging from a frigid -66°F to a blistering 116°F. These wild temperature swings breathe life into our barrels, allowing them to absorb the rich flavors of oak and environment.
- The Yeast – The secret stuff. While our Mash Bill is in clear view, ask any distiller about their yeast and you’ll usually get a deafening silence. We’ll give you this much. To attain our profile, we use a combination of 2 yeasts; a high-yield yeast and a second proprietary yeast that yields a bit less but produces a slightly fruitier alcohol.
- Aging in Wyoming – The harsh environment creates a natural hierarchy within our brickhouse, with top barrels experiencing temperatures 20 degrees higher than those at the bottom. To harness this diversity, we’ve developed a ground-up batching approach, ensuring each batch is crafted with precision and care.
It’s not just our whiskey that’s made here. It’s our lives, too; our pride, history, and inspiration. Every day we make an uncompromising commitment to work with the land’s extremes and its people to make a whiskey that is worthy of Wyoming.
Wyoming Whiskey: National Parks No. 4 – Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Wyoming Whiskey crafts a lot of different spirit varieties, but today’s focus is on one that’s deeply rooted in the outdoors: National Parks No. 4. This whiskey has an MSRP of $79.99 per bottle as a limited-edition bourbon crafted in the same rugged climate that defines the backcountry experience.
A strong liquor such as this can only be yielded from a strong environment like that of Wyoming’s. With a 5 year minimum maturity time, you can receive a unique, distinct taste developed from the harsh environment of the West. Some of the simple specs for this whiskey are listed below as presented by Wyoming Whiskey:
- Aged 5 years
- 49 ALC/VOL
- 98 proof
- 750 ml
Part of the distillery’s annual National Parks Series, National Parks No. 4 pays tribute to Yellowstone National Park and supports Yellowstone Forever. It’s distilled, aged and bottled within Wyoming’s borders, and features bold flavor notes of crème brûlée, vanilla, candied ginger and dark chocolate–enough depth to enjoy neat or anchor a fireside drink
Wyoming Whiskey: National Parks No. 4 – The Taste
Now, how did this bourbon whiskey actually taste?… This is something that my wife and I shared in together over the course of 2 months. We would have a drink here-or-there whenever we found ourselves we some rare free time in the evening to enjoy a glass. We drank it “neat” (room temp, no ice, no water), with a single cube of ice, an even tried to make some cocktails out of the random assortment of ingredients we could pull from our fridge on a given evening.
We both agreed this bourbon whiskey is strong. That should be self-evident in it being 98 proof, but it bears reiterating. Also, it did have some of the advertised flavor notes that Wyoming Whiskey advertises like hints of crème brûlée or vanilla. I also thought that it tasted like it had a bit of smokiness to it.
However we interpreted this vintage of bourbon whiskey hailing from the National Parks Series, it was a great compliment to our own harsh climate of Minnesota where we’ve been seeing snow and negative temps with regularity recently. Being a 98 proof liquor, it is something that you want to drink slowly… savor… and let it resonate on your palate.
With a quality whiskey such as this, I fail to find a legitimate point of constructive criticism other than it tasted so good – sincerely… no hyperbole – that my wife and I almost polished off the whole bottle before I accomplished appropriate photos for this review. So, in the eyes of Wyoming Whiskey, I don’t believe they’d see it as a problem that they’ve crafted a whiskey so good that people drink it too fast. Bravo to them!
Final Thoughts
So, what are my final thoughts about the Wyoming Whiskey National Parks No. 4 Straight Bourbon Whiskey?… Overall, it is a wonderful whiskey. If you want to mix some holiday cocktails or just drink it straight, this is a great go-to for a winter whiskey. Yes, it is a touch expensive at $79.99 per bottle, but in my eyes, I believe it is well worth it.
