AO Review: Wiley X WX JAKL Shooting Glasses

Wiley X is synonymous with high-quality sunglasses, so I jumped at the chance to test one of their latest frames, the WX JAKL. I’ve worn them around the farm, fishing, and shooting at my back acreage gun range for the last month. As expected, they’re a great pair of sunglasses, but not for everyone. Wiley X sent me the WX JAKL Captivate Non-Polarized Tungsten Mirror Sunglasses to test and review. The Triloid Nylon frames are the toughest non-metal material available, and the interchangeable lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection.

Design & Build Quality

I love the look of the WX JAKL sunglasses. Their sleek wraparound design (8-base lens profile and high-wrap frames) ensures a comfortable fit and blocks out most peripheral light. They’re sporty and fit my face well—they don’t feel too big or small. 

The Triloid Nylon frame is lightweight. Because they were so comfortable, I nearly forgot I was wearing the WX JAKL sunglasses. The dual-injected rubber nose pads and temples kept this pair from sliding down my nose, even as I was sweating. 

The frames are rigid enough to feel solid, but forgiving enough not to pinch your head and handle a little roughhousing. The materials used are high quality, but I have a little beef with the marketing label “assembled in the USA.” To me, that means everything was made outside the US, and the sunglasses were put together inside the US. Which is fine, but it almost seems Wiley X is trying to pass them off as “Made in the USA” without saying it. It’s a clever marketing phrase that I’m not a fan of. 

Lenses

The CAPTIVATE non-polarized tungsten mirror lenses are crystal clear. I was surprised by how clear they were, so I had my wife wear them. She said she could see better with them on, too. Some lens options are polarized and come in various colors, but might not be ballistic rated. 

The lenses I tested were impact resistant and protect my eyes from harmful UV rays, which is perfect for the shooting range, working around the yard (mowing, weedeating), and other common activities around the farm. 

Performance

While doing chores and wearing the WX JAKL sunglasses, I never felt uncomfortable, head pinching, or inconvenienced by them sliding down my nose. 

While shooting, I could clearly see my red dot, iron sights, and through my scope. I hesitate to take this pair of sunglasses hunting because the lenses are too reflective and draw unnecessary attention to me while in the woods. I also recommend getting a pair of polarized lenses for fishing to see into the water.

• Don’t press against my head too tightly
• Look great

Cons

• Expensive (They’re in the same price range as other high-end sunglasses, I’m just cheap)

Versatility

The Wiley X JAKL sunglasses are versatile. This tactical series is great for wearing at work, around the house, and while you’re out and about. I wouldn’t hesitate to wear them for most activities. I know a lot of hunters who wear sunglasses while hunting, but I’m just not one of them. However, while sighting in my guns, training, or plinking at the range, I’ll definitely wear these for eye pro on sunny days. 

One reason these sunglasses are even more versatile than others is the interchangeable lenses. This means you can quickly switch out the lenses to match the activity and light availability.

The Wiley X WX JAKL sunglasses are versatile, comfortable, and fit my face well. However, they’re a tad expensive for my taste, but all high-end sunglasses are a bit pricey for me. I see myself wearing these sunglasses for a long time while working outside, going to the range, and the occasional trip to town.
