Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! This AMT Baby Auto-Mag is one of 1,000 made in 1985 when AMT tried to cram .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire power into a concealed carry package. Sounded better on paper than it worked in reality. The Baby Auto-Mag came out during the 1980s when everyone wanted the biggest, most powerful handgun they could get. AMT’s original Auto-Mag had gotten famous in movies, so they figured they could sell that mystique in a smaller gun. The tricky part was making a semi-auto that worked with rimfire magnum ammo. The .22 WMR hits hard for its size, but rimfire cartridges don’t ignite as consistently as centerfire rounds. AMT had to tune the blowback action perfectly to make it cycle reliably.
They only made 1,000 because manufacturing was a pain and the market wasn’t there. The Baby Auto-Mag had the same reliability problems that plagued most AMT guns back then. Their quality control was hit-or-miss, and building this compact magnum was harder than they thought. The wooden case and manuals show AMT tried to position this as a premium gun, but it flopped. These days the Baby Auto-Mag is just a weird curiosity from when American gun makers were willing to try anything, even if it didn’t make much sense.
