Every year, a new cartridge emerges as the darling of the industry. For 2025, it is the 7mm Backcountry. (For a more detailed look, check out AllOutdoor Editor Adam Scepaniak’s first look at the cartridge.) In summary, Federal utilizes new case technology with its patented Peak Alloy case. This enables Federal Ammunition to push velocities without excessive pressure spikes. The cartridge’s design is smaller than that of 7mm magnums, allowing it to be chambered in standard long-action rifles rather than magnum-action rifles, resulting in less felt recoil. Additionally, Federal tailored the cartridge for a 20” barrel to make it ideal for suppressor use.
Roll Your Own
Up until now, the only route for ammunition has been through buying factory ammo. Usually, when cartridges are introduced, reloading data is also released. This allows tinkerers and custom rifle builders to tailor a load to their specific firearm. This data also remains within safe pressure guidelines to help the reloader exercise extra caution. However, this wasn’t the case with the introduction of the Backcountry.
Likely, the delay was due to developing safe data while maintaining that there was a surplus of Peak Alloy cases on the market (via new or once-fired brass). Secondly, Federal needed to team up with a reloading tool and die company to produce quality dies for the Backcountry. Initially, that company is Lee Precision, Inc., which has released a Micrometer Full Length Die Set.
Zooming Out
It is good to see that Federal has finally made important reloading data available to hunters and shooters alike. Likewise, the initial loadings are for standard Federal-used projectiles and do not encompass all available 7mm bullets. Hopefully, soon, Hornady, Sierra, and others will release more 7mm Backcountry data centered on their 7mm bullets.
