In a preemptive move to safeguard constitutional freedoms, Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced on Tuesday the creation of a new Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the Trump administration’s commitment to protecting gun owners’ rights across America.
“The Department of Justice’s new 2nd Amendment Task Force will combine department-wide policy and litigation resources to advance President Trump’s pro-gun agenda and protect gun owners from overreach,” stated Attorney General Bondi, who will personally chair this important effort.
The task force emerges as part of a broader strategy to restore and strengthen Second Amendment protections that many gun rights advocates felt were eroded during the previous administration. The Department of Justice has wasted no time in taking action, having already repealed the Biden-era “Zero Tolerance” policy that many considered an unjust burden on law-abiding gun owners.
President Trump laid the groundwork for these measures in February through a comprehensive executive order on Second Amendment rights, where he emphasized: “Because it is foundational to maintaining all other rights held by Americans, the right to keep and bear arms must not be infringed.” This executive order directed Attorney General Bondi to assess ongoing infringements of this constitutionally guaranteed right and create a plan of action to protect Americans’ Second Amendment freedoms.
The new task force will bring together expertise from various agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. With the Associate Attorney General serving as vice chair, this collaborative approach ensures that the full resources of the federal government will be deployed to defend Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms.
One of the DOJ’s first actions in this area was to reverse a controversial policy regarding stabilizing braces on handguns, which had previously resulted in reclassifying many firearms as short-barreled rifles subject to stricter regulation. This decision has been celebrated by Second Amendment supporters as a return to reasonable interpretation of gun laws.
Attorney General Bondi made it clear that the fundamental right to keep and bear arms will no longer be treated as a “second-class right” under the current administration. This represents a marked shift from previous policies that many gun owners felt unfairly targeted them despite their law-abiding status.
The creation of this task force signals that the defense of Second Amendment rights remains a top priority for the Trump administration, giving gun owners across the country confidence that their constitutional freedoms are being actively protected at the highest levels of government.
