If you’re looking for a set of useful knives for hunting and fishing chores, but you’re not looking to spend a lot of money, Outdoor Edge has once again stepped up to the plate with the new Vantex series.
The Vantex series only has three knives in it, but it should cover all the basics.
First, there’s a drop-point knife with a 3.5-inch blade. This is intended to be compact hunting knife, for the general cutting duties you might have afield or around camp. It’s lightweight, at 3.2 ounces, or 4.8 ounces with the plastic (ABS/TPE/polypropylene) sheath.
Then there’s the 5-inch boning knife. This slightly longer blade with a middleweight flex is intended to help you separate meat off a big game carcass. It only weighs 2.4 ounces, or 4 ounces with the plastic sheath.
Finally, there’s the three-inch caping knife. For some reason, Outdoor Edge didn’t include any details on this knife, but it appears to have the same construction as the other knives, with non-slip handle and full-tang, titanium-coated, high-carbon steel blade to hold corrosion at bay while still taking an edge without much difficulty (although they certainly won’t be as handy to sharpen as the replaceable blades on Outdoor Edge’s more expensive disposable-blade knives).
Speaking of sharpening, note that a pull-through two-stage sharpener is included if you buy all three knives as a kit—nothing fancy, but serviceable in the field. Individually, the knives are $24.99 apiece, including the sheath that is easily strapped to your pack with the strap loops at each end. But if you pay $79.99 you can buy all three knives, and get the sharpener thrown in, along with a roll-style pack that helps you stay organized.
The whole set weighs 16.8 ounces, so for most hunters, it’s an affordable and relatively lightweight way to bring the knives you need to the backcountry.
The Vantex knives aren’t in stock yet, but Outdoor Edge says we can expect them in April, either at your local or online retailer, or for direct purchase through OutdoorEdge.com. Keep an eye out there for more details.
